Raw, rinsed and washed

Raw denim is left unwashed after weaving and sewing. It is stiff, dark and may shrink when first washed by the customer, and it fades over time according to how it is worn. Rinsed denim has been washed once to remove some shrinkage and stiffness while keeping a dark color. Washed denim goes through further processing to create a specific shade, softness and wear pattern.

Each finish suits a different customer. Raw appeals to buyers who want to create their own fades; washed suits customers who want the finished look on day one.

What changes for your brand

Consider these differences:

  • Fit: raw jeans may shrink after the first wash; size guidance must explain this.
  • Appearance: raw jeans change with wear; washed jeans look finished on purchase.
  • Color transfer: raw indigo can rub onto light fabrics, which care labels should mention.
  • Consistency: washed shades vary slightly between batches; agree a shade band.
  • Care: raw denim needs clearer customer education.

Specifying the finish

For raw denim, measure the sample before and after a rinse to understand shrinkage, and decide whether your size chart describes the garment before or after washing. For washed denim, approve the shade on the sample and keep it as the reference for bulk.

Many brands offer the same fit in a raw or rinse version and one or two washed versions. Keep the pattern consistent and adjust for shrinkage where needed.

Questions buyers ask

Do washed jeans still shrink? Washed denim has already been through processing, so it usually changes less than raw denim, but it can still change slightly. Measure samples after an agreed care cycle. Do raw jeans need special care? Customers are usually advised to wash them less often and inside out in cold water; write this on the care label and product page.

Offering both in one range

A common approach is one fit offered as a raw version for enthusiasts and a washed version for everyday customers. Keep the pattern the same and adjust for shrinkage where needed so both versions fit as intended.
