Why denim quotes vary so much
Two quotes for 'a pair of jeans' can differ widely because they often describe different products. One factory may assume a basic rinse and standard hardware, another a multi-step vintage wash with custom rivets and a leather patch. A good RFQ removes that ambiguity so you can compare like with like.
The most common gaps are fabric weight and composition, the wash target, hardware specification and the size range. If any of these are missing, the factory has to guess, and the guess is usually reflected in the price or the sample result.
A practical denim RFQ in five parts
Organize your request in this order and the first reply can address price, MOQ and timing directly:
- Product and fit: style name, reference photos, base size measurements or a reference garment.
- Fabric: weight range, rigid or stretch, raw or washed, color direction.
- Wash and finish: reference photos of the target shade and any distressing, plus what is not acceptable.
- Branding: button and rivet finish, patch material, labels, hang tags, packaging.
- Order details: quantity per color and size, delivery country, target launch date.
What happens after you send it
We review the brief, ask about anything unclear and confirm the sample scope. The MOQ is 100 pcs and sample lead time is typically 7 days after the brief and materials are agreed; bulk timing depends on the order quantity. Common mistakes in denim RFQs
The most common mistake is describing the wash only in words such as 'mid blue vintage'. Two suppliers can interpret that very differently. Attach photos taken in daylight, and if possible send a physical reference. Another frequent gap is the size range: quote prices can change if the range includes very large sizes.
Finally, separate must-haves from nice-to-haves. If custom rivets are optional, say so; the supplier can then quote both options and you can choose.
Example of a complete denim RFQ
A complete request might read: 'Relaxed straight jeans, reference pair available. Fabric: rigid denim, mid-heavy weight. Wash: mid-blue vintage with light whiskers, photos attached; no distressing. Hardware: antique brass buttons and rivets. Branding: leather back patch, woven waistband label. Sizes 28–36. Quantity: 100 per wash, two washes. Destination: Germany. Launch: three months from now.' That is enough for a useful quote and sample plan.
Comparing denim quotes
Line up quotes against the same fabric, wash, hardware and packing. Ask each supplier to state what is included.
