Selvedge denim is woven on narrower shuttle looms that produce a finished edge, which is often shown on the outseam when the hem is cuffed. Because the fabric is narrower, pattern pieces must be laid out so the selvedge runs along the outseam, which affects fabric usage and cost.
Buyers usually choose selvedge for its appearance and heritage appeal. The brief should state whether the selvedge edge must be visible, the color of the selvedge ID line if you have a preference, and whether the fabric is to be left raw or washed.
Selvedge programs depend on fabric availability, so confirm these early:
Selvedge fabric generally costs more than wide-loom denim and its narrower width uses more fabric per garment. If budget is a concern, discuss whether a smaller color range or a simpler trim package keeps the program viable. The MOQ is 100 pcs and samples typically take 7 days once fabric is confirmed. Compare with our raw denim program, or read the denim weight guide in the resources section.
Will customers see the selvedge? Only if the hem is cuffed or the outseam is visible in photos, so decide whether your product photography and styling will show it. Is selvedge always raw? No — selvedge can be rinsed or washed. If you plan a washed selvedge jean, approve the wash with the selvedge line visible, as washing can change its look.
Order a fabric swatch first to confirm the selvedge line and color before full samples.
Show the selvedge cuff in product photos.
Confirm fabric availability for reorders early.
Approve the cuffed look on a model to see how the selvedge shows.
Check the selvedge edge is straight along the outseam.
